Sour Grapes: did we misjudge the story’s morale

I was just thinking (yes we all give into that temptation every now and then):

Some of my friends make a lot more money than I do, and are placed a few rungs higher (be it in organizations and businesses different from where I work) in the corporate ladder than me. It doesn’t really bother me most of the time, but I won’t be totally honest if I didn’t admit that at times I wish I was earning as much or getting ahead as much (but then again I have not followed up on “better” job offers as recently as last month, so I know I don’t want it as much).

Anyway, the point is, that for example when I go abroad and wish to buy presents for these friends of mine, I know I can’t afford as expensive a present as they had brought for me when they went abroad, because the money makes the big difference when I’m traveling to the more expensive part of the world, for good old Dhaka it’s pretty good. The thing is, I think – infact I know – that not being able to afford some things, makes me more capable of appreciating some other things that I notice others miss out on. You know the finer things in life, like free time, a job I like and can take leave from when I wish to etc. So here’s my question, am I just being the fox who said ‘sour gapes’? And even if I am, is that so bad? Have we been totally wrong in judging the Fox from that famous fable? What if, instead of being a ‘wise ass’ he was just ‘wise’? Aren’t we, in the end, happier if we know that the grapes were sour, and maybe bump into a mango grove or something? (I like grapes but I love mangos). Wouldn’t it be infact bordering a psychological problem if we keep going for something that was totally out of reach, and can’t possibly get? Imagine if you were the vine yard and the Fox was some weird, psychotic guy you wanted nothing to do with … you’d really want him to say “sour grapes” wouldn’t you?

Please do not send it back to me as I have already received it from a Very Good Looking Damn Smart Woman. And remember this motto to live by: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, red wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ "WOO HOO what a ride!"Luv and hugs ~Nikki~
